With the changing nature of Geography, the Department always incorporates new ideas, methodologies and techniques in its curriculum to fulfill the increasing demands of the society.

Laboratory Facilities:

  • Computer Laboratory: Computers with Internet facilities, SPSS software for Quantitative Analysis
  • GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory: Geometica software, Arc-view software, TNT mips Software, Satellite Imageries and Image Processing, GPS survey, Aerial Photographs interpretation
  • Cartographic Laboratory: Topographical Maps, Thematic Maps, Abney Level, Prismatic Compass, Plane-Table, Dumpy Level, Theodolite, Planimetres, Clinometres

 Strengths:

  •  Well exposure to the students with Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) and statistical software for solving geographic questions. All the faculty members of this Department have trained in Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS).
  • The high quality of our students and high demand for admission in both the Postgraduate and Ph.D. courses. During the period from 2011to 2015, around 71 students have qualified NET/SET (NET-53 and SET-18).
  • Introduction of innovative and job oriented curriculum. Simultaneous attention was paid to the theoretical and the practical aspects in curricular design that make the students familiar with modern technological skills and devices and thereby making them eligible for getting jobs in various public and private concerns. Field Survey is mandatory in curriculum to gain ground knowledge of the students towards the man-environment relationship over space and time. Preparation of Field Report, Project Report, and Term Paper are included in the postgraduate curriculum and these lessons promote studentā€centered learning.
  • Adequate use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in teaching and learning process.
  • Special care and guidance for slow learners that improving academic performance of these students.

Challenges:

  • To ensure quality of teaching with international standard.
  • To ensure quality of research outputs with international standard.
  • The placement of the students is a significant aspect which needs to be improved and ensured.
  • To provide job oriented knowledge and skills.
  • To establish anadvancedRS-GIS laboratory and well equipped laboratories for Agricultural Geography and Environmental Geography with international standard.

 Future plan:

  • To introduce short term certificate course on Remote Sensing and GIS application.
  • To develop advanced RS-GIS laboratory and full-fledged Agricultural Geography and Environmental Geography Laboratories.
  • To develop at least two smart classrooms.
  • To set up WiFi facility in the Department.
  • To set up a digital weather station.
