ICEE

ICEE

International Centre for Ecological Engineering (ICEE) has been set up in the University of Kalyani in collaboration with the International Ecological Engineering Society, Switzerland in 2003. The Centre conceived the idea of starting a Masters course in Environmental Management. and the Department of Environmental Management was created in 2010 that subsequently started a M. Tech/M. Sc course in Environmental Management from the academic session 2010-2011. In parallel, ICEE is running in full swing in conducting considerable research, training and extension activities on different aspects of environmental issues.

Owing to its inherent interdisciplinary nature the course is being run with the academic inputs from resource persons of diverse disciplines from various universities and institutes.

Objective of the course

The objective of the course is to develop adequate skill as environmental managers through proper training, survey and exposure to environmental problems of major industries for management options. Basically, the students will be trained in all aspects of environment management and cutting edge technology in order to enhance their knowledge to address the recent environmental problems and management.

Facilities

The infrastructural facilities of the Environmental Management classroom and laboratories have been developed with required instruments, audio-visual system and computer facilities. The Department has moderate collection of literature, books and periodicals.  Most of the text books and reference books required for the course are available in theCentral Library in the University.

This is a challenging opportunity for any enterprising student for developing entrepreneurship and NGO for self employment and consultancy service.

Conference/Seminar/Lecture organized

A seminar was organized on 14th January, 2012 in the ICEE and Department of Environmental Management. The following international speakers delivered lectures on various environment related topics.

  • Professor Stephen Armstrong, Dean of Engineering, Noble International University, USA delivered a talk on Innovation in Engineering and Management.
  • Professor Roger Hansell, University of Toronto, Canada delivered a lecture on New invention related to control of Global Warming.
  • Professor Bob Ganguly, Noble Institution  for Environmental Peace, Canada delivered a lecture on Application of Environmental Peace.
  • Dr. Atin Adhikary, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Health, College of Medicine, University of Cincinnati, USA delivered a lecture on “Health Effects of pesticide aerosols in farming environments- assessment of new control technologies” on November 7, 2012
  • An international seminar on “Current status of Arsenic, Flouride and pathogens in drinking water: Treatment methods and experiences” was organized on April 1, 2013 in cooperation with Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany
  • Prof. B. B. Jana ex-Vice-Chairman of ICEE was invited to execute an Indo-EU partnership project of SWINGS project on Safeguarding Water resources in India with Green and Sustainable technologies in 2012

Project Under Development

  • Dr. Frank Panning, engineer, Germany and his group visited ICEE for initiating a long term collaborative research with ICEE. This collaborative research will be of immense help for managing arsenic laden drinking water in the rural Bengal.
  • Dr. Leonhard Fechter, from the German Company Herbst Umwelttechnik GmbH in Berlin also visited and participated in a long term collaborative research in order to set up a self sustained unit for arsenic treatment based on the results of common research activities of ICEE and German Company. It is needless to say that arsenic, fluoride and other heavy metal pollution are posing a serious threat in our country and any attempt to mitigate these problems through any collaborative project will be of immense help to the masses of rural people who will be able to get back their quality life and protect themselves from various water borne diseases.
  • Professor Y. Munekage, Department of Environmental Engineering, Kochi University, Japan visited ICEE from April 3-8, 2012 and discussed about collaboration.
  • ICEE is conducting research on ICAR sponsored proposal of Assessment of Impact of Climate Change on Inland Aquaculture in selected districts of West Bengal and selection of microalgae and aquatic weeds towards mitigation of climate change and response of fish breeding have been achieved by manipulating the culture conditions. A major achievement of enhanced fish growth and breeding of cichlid fish tilapia during winter can lead to profitable use of benefits of greenhouse.
