Current Activities:
We are pursuing several research fronts rooted in synthetic, structural, physical inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry with emphasis on compounds of importance in electronic, biomimetic chemistry and energy science. The use of a range of tools including spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, magnetometry, electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, computations, photochemistry, catalysis, cryogenic techniques and electrochemistry reflect the breadth of problems under investigation. We use multiple-bonded bimetallic systems to study multi-electron redox chemistry for the activation of small molecules of energy and environmental importance. Spectroscopic methods used in our research include electronic absorption (UV-vis), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies. These tools are particularly powerful when used in conjunction with computational methods, as they permit the characterization of the geometric and electronic structures of fleeting intermediates too unstable to be characterized using standard crystallographic methods. A strong synergy between experiment and computation is indispensable to our research.
