Research Area:

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), the most frequent genetic disorder worldwide results from the deficiency of dystrophin. Utrophin can functionally compensate for dystrophin deficiency, but in the adult muscles, its level is low. Therefore upregulation of utrophin expression has been considered a potential therapeutic strategy for DMD. Our group studies the regulatory mechanisms of utrophin expression. We have identified two sequence elements and one upstream ORF in mouse utrophin-A 5’UTR as cis-acting repressors for utrophin expression. We have reported that the poly C binding protein 2 (PCBP2) interacts with mouse utrophin-A mRNA and results in its nuclear retention.
